Q for Quokka
Here’s another!
Some of you may not know about quokkas, and this is because their primary home is a small island, off the coast of Perth, Western Australia, called Rottnest. Like their marsupial cousins, the kangaroo, they hop around on their hind legs, and their young are also called joeys. They are curious, friendly creatures and unfortunately, due to human interaction, such as feeding and sometimes cruelty, quokka numbers are decreasing, which means they have been listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.
This little guy is one that I was lucky enough to meet on a day trip to the island, whilst I lived in Perth. From the photo, I’ve exchanged a big Q stamp for the food he was actually eating, and as always, the quokka is made up of smaller Q stamps.

Coffee stain art – let’s celebrate unusual techniques
A friend of mine sent me a link to this artist – Hong Yi, who creates these incredible portraits made up of coffee cup rings, and her talents don’t stop there. Browsing through her website, she uses objects in all sorts of interesting and imaginative ways to make her art – melted candles, tea bags, sculpted books….you must check out her website to see the extent of her creativity.
With my ink stamp technique I feel akin to artists like this, who see potential creativity all around them. Let’s celebrate that vision, but also those who are brave enough to put that vision into practice, who do and make, instead of just thinking about it. If you are someone who is thinking about putting coffee stain to canvas, date stamp to paper or even good old pencil to paper, whether it’s a career you regret not pursuing of a hobby you miss, in the words of Nike ‘Just do it’. Hong Yi will surely get you inspired.

First BAZAAR of 2016
Come along to the first BAZAAR of 2016 at The Waiting Room, Colchester, on Saturday 6th February from 11am – 4pm. new pet portrait
I have just finished a portrait of the beautiful dog Binks, who sadly passed away, earlier this year. Binks’ owner got in touch with me and asked if I could create a piece of work to commemorate the life of her beloved pet, so I suggested using both the date of birth and date Binks died to create the portrait, working from photographs.
